Nostalgia

By Jamari Jordan

Memories begin to rush in my head
Like the crystal clear waves on the soft, sandy shore
The days of our past better than our present
Please don’t make me go back to the future

Before the shattered glass and dreams
The name calling and shouting matches
The heartbreak and endless pain
The ultimate betrayal

There was hope and promise
Listening and understanding
Passion and butterflies
Loyalty and trust

Memories keep rushing in my head
Like the crystal clear waves on the soft, sandy shore
The days of our past better than our present
I don’t want to go back to the future

You used to be happy
Used to smile
Used to trust me
Talk to me

I used to hear you
I used to value your opinion
Care about your feelings
Believe in you

Now, you can’t even look me in the eyes
Now,  I can’t stop my wandering eye
Now, you stop talking whenever I walk in the room
And I can’t even recognize what we’ve become

We sit in the same room, but we’re both lonely
We put on these appearances in front of company
We keep letting our friends think we’re the golden couple
But, we can’t pretend like it’s not over anymore

Yet, still these memories rush in my head
Like the crystal clear waves on the soft, sandy shore
The days of our past better than our present
I’m not going back to the future
