The Optimistic Doubter

By Jamari Jordan

If love is real,

why does it stay hidden

If dreams come true,

this wait is quite excessive.

I’m afraid to bask in the sun

for it may burn my skin

I’m cautious to show my true self

for it may crumble under expectations

Truth exposes the soul

fear conceals that very truth

Red sparks shout at sky

while the shadows keep their secrets

Trust is the enemy of doubt

my guarded heart will never be safe

The intensity not matched

its complement never to be found

i run from potential soul mates

Only to be caught up in bad situations

pain is my greatest desire

Love, the most dangerous threat

i enjoy isolation

Only to be trapped by my thoughts

i doubt I’ll ever be content

But, I hope one day I could be happy.
